So I went to see the amazing Darrell Scott back in May of 23. At The Bowery in Winnsboro TX. One of the finest rooms I've ever caught a show in. It holds 80, and it's for listening. Darrell was solo. And he'd play acoustic guitar on a song, then he'd play an electric. Then he'd go play a couple on the piano. Then he'd go sit at his steel guitar and play one. He even strapped on his electric guitar and sat down at the steel guitar and played “Desperados Waiting For A Train”, bouncing back and forth between both instruments. An incredible show, the kind of show you really can't talk about when you leave. You just kinda of stare and try to round yourself back up. One of those shows.
But the thing that has stuck with me the most from that night was when Darrell played "Born in 55". What a song! And check this out, that song was written by Ben Bullington. Then Darrell played a song called "Thanksgiving 1985" also written by Ben. These two songs floored me, they were in my opinion the best of the night, maybe because I had never heard them.
So I had to find out more. I really like good songs and I like finding out where they come from.
It turns out Darrell, a divorced dad, just taking his kids on a camping trip. Meets Ben, a divorced dad just taking his kids on a camping trip. And they hit it off like a couple of divorced dads taking their kids on a camping trip.
And I understood that neither one knew the other wrote songs.
Well anyways, they became friends. They both write amazing songs. Darrell Scott plays his all over the world. And Ben was a doctor in Montana, and never played his songs anywhere. He just loves to write them. Ben passes away from pancreatic cancer. And Darrell thought Ben's work was so good that he made a record full of Ben's tunes. It's called "10". And if you like songwriters with good songs check it out. I've had it with me since that night.
And Oh Yeah, I'll be at The Bowery in Winnsboro on May 10, playing some of my songs.
You should come see that room.
